About Us
WHO WE ARE
We began all those years ago…in September 2004. When two of us were stranded in KL for our Hari Raya holidays and we whipped up a trip to Penang, out of sheer boredom. And then that’s where it ALL began. Nicholas and Ben got bit by the travel bug, and there was never any turning back. The next year, we reprised our trip, this time going round the country in 10 days.
Borneo kids in college were especially united during our tenure as seniors with our corresponding juniors – we ate all our horrid weekend meals together, went jogging, cycling and to Grand Union with each other, parked ourself in each other’s chalets while waiting for the weekend to slowly inch by, helped each other hang laundry, and the other decidedly boring things people who have to stay behind in weekends do.
We help each other out on the rare weekend trip out, scouting for transportation and accommodation, keeping tabs on each other as we travel through the human snarl that is KL, buying food for the poor souls left in college.
Given how often we freeload in people’s houses, it’s only natural of us to casually go “Oh, you can drop by at our houses anytime you want”, seeing as the empty promise is never fulfilled. Well, one day, a Perlis family struck back. And hey presto, our diversification into local tours began.
Since then, we’ve been taking people to the most sensational corners of Borneo, sitting back with smug smiles as they gasp at the mountains, the white water rafting, the longhouses, the sensational kayaking through mountain ranges…and above all, the way Borneo makes her guests feel as if they should have been born here.
STAFF
Staff are people, KYUEM or non-KYUEM, who assist us on our tours, and who oversee the day-to-day operations of the agency. Most of them are in secondary school, college or university somewhere, thus it makes sense that we, above all, understand the needs of the backpacking fraternity. We understand your budgetary constraints and will help you eke every sen’s worth from your ringgit.
Initially we were staffed from the 4th Kota Kinabalu Company Boys’ Brigade – after a gruelling schedule of at least 4 camps a year, plus my virtually lifelong membership with them, they struck me as the best candidates to manage a tour.
Later, after a chance meeting of many nice people at BTN, a government camp, we hired our first Sarawakian staff…and we will continue hiring as long as you fit the bill.
AFFILIATES
Affiliates are the lovely people who help us out on tours. The majority being parents of Borneo students, who point us in the right direction everywhere we go, hunting for the best coffee shops, the shortest cuts to anywhere, the cheapest ways to get anywhere. They are our local eyes and ears, giving us the lay of the land, and always extending their sensational hospitality to us.
MEMBERS
In a sense, members are all the people born in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan we have around college, and we invite them to activities, generally with little response, given as they are all during exams or holidays, both off limits.
GAWAI CELEBRATIONS
For the FIRST time in college history, we had a Gawai/Harvest Festival joint celebration in college, complete with requisite mystery item, snacks, drinks, and the night-long dancing session, that only ended when all of us seniors realised our Chemistry A-Level exam was the next day. Anyhow, it was good, not necessarily clean fun, and ending on a sad note…it will be our last celebration.
