borneo headhunters club
boldly going where no tour bus has gone before

Future Tours

The organization has a few big plans in the making – anyone interested in joining (IMPORTANT!), being a part of planning, or knowing anything relevant that might assist in making the following tours a reality (VERY IMPORTANT!) is always welcome to drop me a line, or more, at nicholas86@gmail.com, or direct to the company hotline, borneo.headhunters@yahoo.com, which is actually preferable as all staff can access THAT email account and forward the relevant details to me.

Note: we HAVEN’T planned OR done any of the following tours yet, so we welcome feedback and any tips that might help us get off the ground. There is a maximum of 10 per tour in most cases to make it cost efficient (anything above 10 gets a tad messy in arranging vans and boats) so a first come first serve basis applies. Do contact me quick if you see anything here you MIGHT want to join that suits your timetable.

“Planned” tours will obviously be struck off the list and transferred to “Past” tours upon completion.

Local Tours

Unless specifically mentioned, generally open to a limited 10 “Westerners” and an infinite amount of locals who should preferably have their own transport and accommodation, or know someone who own it.

UP THE REJANG RIVER

Projected Date: Early July 2007

Projected Duration: 1 week

The Gist: We begin in Sibu, where a few days of local hospitality (and binge-eating of Foochow food) will be followed by the trip up the river. Highlights include stopping in Kapit, a Chinese epicentre of nearby Iban longhouses, followed by a sojourn up the treacherous (and in many cases fatal) upper Rajang, especially the Pelagus Rapids, to be ended by another longhouse hunt – this time Kayan and Kenyah – near Belaga. Departure by flight out to Bintulu.

Help Needed:

  • Connections to Iban and Orang Ulu longhouses in Kapit and Belaga respectively
  • Hosts in Sibu (if numbers are great)
  • Boat charges and safety records
  • Flight schedule from Belaga to Bintulu

DOWN THE HEADHUNTERS TRAIL

Projected Date: Anytime in July-September 2007

Projected Duration: 2 weeks

The Gist: We begin in Miri, visiting the nearby Niah Caves and Lambir Park National Park, and marvelling at the utter cleanliness, splendid parks, and luscious beaches Miri has to offer. Yes, I know I HAVE an inherent bias towards Miri (it IS my 2nd favourite city in Malaysia after KK).

Then we proceed by boat up the Baram River to Marudi, by express boat again to Long Terawan, and by longboat from there to Mulu Caves, where we have the option of doing a million things that all cost lots of money if done alone. Which is why we NEED a fit and hardy group who can keep going, going, going. Highlights include scaling Gunung Mulu, 5th highest in Malaysia, the Pinnacles, the caves, and a few local curiosities.

Departure is via the Headhunters Trail to Nanga Medamit, then by van from there to Limbang, where Miri (or Lawas) is but a boat ride away.

Note this itinerary can be done in the opposite direction

Help Needed:

  • A backpacker lodge in Miri! Please, please, open one by next year.
  • NUMBERS. This trip will be expensive if our numbers are small

THE HEART OF BORNEO

Projected Date: Anytime amenable to the visitor

Projected Duration: 1 week

The Gist: Travelling from KK down to Keningau, where a 4WD awaits to take us to Sapulut, a 10 hour journey on mud tracks and logging roads. At Sapulut, the longboat journey begins to Batu Punggul, near the Indonesian border, a natural wonder in its own right.

Help Needed:

  • 4 people have to go. No more or it gets expensive.
  • Contacts of ANYONE in Keningau or Sapulut who will drive us for less than the listed price on Lonely Planet guidebooks.
  • Anyone with relatives in the interior who might be able to assist

One Response to “Future Tours”

  1. I may be interested in one of these trips, have a Malay wife from Kapit and her family has a share in a hotel in town
