Homestays
LONG PASIA
3D 2N or 4D 3N ex-Kota Kinabalu
Long Pasia is a Lundayeh (Lun Bawang in Sarawak) village deep within the hinterland of Sabah, only accessible via a 6-hour journey on a rutted dirt trek on the back of a 4-wheel drive. The village offers a plethora of unique cultural activities, the Lundayeh culture unique like no other – trekking to local pitcher plant parks, night hunting and hiking, and general participation in the local cultural activities and daily rituals are all part of a homestay in this charming village.
KUDAT LONGHOUSE
2D 1N ex-Kota Kinabalu
Always a steal, this trip includes authentic local food, transport, a complimentary bead gift, a host of dances and drinking, and the sheer thrill of living in a longhouse for a night, complete with authentic paraffin lamps. This trip can be combined with a trip to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau the “tip of Borneo”, 40 km away, a series of cliffs weathered by and always a breathtaking sight for those accustomed to the flat plains or rolling jungle of their home countries.
MAI AMAN KADAZAN HOMESTAY
2D 1N ex-Kota Kinabalu
Situated in a picturesque village barely 30 km out of Kota Kinabalu, this village offers Kadazan cooking lessons, roof thatching sessions, stays in authentic Kadazan houses with zero lighting or electricity, all within the safe confines of a fenced compound. There is a pajak (a traditional Kadazan drinking hut) next door where one can observe, if not partake, in the fascinating tradition of the Kadazan drinking sessions, traditionally operating especially on weekends.
CULTURAL VILLAGES
MONSOPIAD CULTURAL VILLAGE
2-hour tour ex-Kota Kinabalu
An experience not to be missed if one is NOT from Sabah or has no exposure to Eastern indigenous cultures, this centre is built around a headhunters’ dwelling, where 40 actual headhunted skulls still remain. On a less gory note, there are cultural dances, featuring audience participation, local games and stilt races to join in, a fascinating array of musical instruments, and if fate is blowing your way, a chance to witness actual rice wine distillation. For an entry fee of RM 30 (foreign) RM 15 (local), this place is certainly worth a visit, if not only for the sheer abundance of photo-ops.
WATER VILLAGES
Day trip ex-Kota Kinabalu
For the price of a boat ride and a half-hour drive we offer strolls through one of the more authentic water villages in Kota Kinabalu, where you can observe children dashing about, adults quietly going about their daily business, and traditional Kadazan villagers living in houses on stilts above water, oblivious to the creeping passage of modernization.
